in 2024, Sydney Marathon was in the final year of its candidacy to become one of the Abbot Marathon Majors and contacted Sports4Cast to help integrate stronger data storytelling into their broadcast coverage.
Sports4Cast was involved in a range of areas in the lead up to the race, from advising on the technologies available to obtain live athlete biometric data to how best to economically implement these into the broadcast, as well as performing analysis on previous races to generate insights to take to commentary.
MEDIA DATA PACKS
As part of the preparation, significant analysis of previous races was undertaken. A database of Sydney results, as well as other marathon majors, was created to allow detailed comparisons and analysis to be drawn.
All of this was put into a data pack for the commentary and broadcast teams, along with detailed individual athlete biographies, to bring enhanced insights to the viewers at home.
LIVE BIOMETRIC DATA
A major change to the broadcast this year was the inclusion of live biometric data from the athletes. A partnership with Garmin was arranged and, using their watch technology, live heart rate, cadence and pace was brought to broadcast.
This allowed engaging, new insights to be brought to TV along with the associated text analysis sent to the commentary team for them to read out on air.
