Just what is going on here?
Football4Cast has grown out of the work we perform with clubs. Essentially we have all the data, and thought that we should publish some of it for the fans as well – copying the same idea as Rugby4Cast.
Ultimately though it falls under the same premise as everything else we do – data should improve the engagement and decision making in sport. Hopefully the information around here helps you understand the events, the teams, their chances and what you should be looking out for – and helps guide you in which events and matches you should be following and watching.
So how do these work?
Essentially, we have a large database of football matches from leagues across the world.
Broadly speaking, our predictions model is largely based on a proprietary rankings system (which you can see the output of on the various events pages), but it also looks at other things like scoring patterns in historical games – both in head to head matches and overall – to work out the expected chance for each team based on location and current ranking.
More accurately speaking, this means that each prediction is actually a metric to describe the relative historical strength of the two teams, based on their performances over previous years. However, we think it is more fun to think of them as predictions. At the very least, it certainly serves to provoke the trolls lurking on Twitter. You know who you are!
Back in the day, before we set up this rather professional looking website that you currently find yourself on, one of the first things that everyone always asked us when discussing the predictions was …
“And do you bet on these?”
And the answer, for years and years, was always …
“No. No we don’t actually.”
So, as much to allow for greater scope in conversation as anything else, we decided a few years ago to look at how to make recommendations based on the predictions.
Our first few forays were fairly disastrous, but we’ve worked on the approach and now seem to have something that works. We’re fairly open about what’s going on – this isn’t some nefarious affiliates site that will disappear – so click around some of the links below to see what’s what.

Identifying mispricings and opportunities
Should you be betting on these matches? Generally we’d advise against it, but if you absolutely must then it’s probably worth checking our analysis pages.
