The HNL consists of 10 clubs. During the season each club meets every other club twice, once at home and once away. Subsequently at the end of each season, the bottom club is relegated to the second level of the Croatian league system, the Second Football League or Druga HNL. The champion of the Druga HNL are automatically promoted to the HNL.
At the end of the 2014–15 season, the Croatian First League was ranked 17th in Europe. The champions the First Football League will qualify for the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. The runners-up will qualify for the second qualifying round of UEFA Europa League. Finally, the third-placed team will qualify for the first qualifying round of UEFA Europa League. The winners of the Croatian Football Cup will qualify for the third qualifying round of UEFA Europa League.
