The NHL is made up of thirty-two teams from across the United States and Canada, divided into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays an 82-game regular season before the leading sides reach the play-offs — four gruelling best-of-seven rounds that culminate in the Stanley Cup Final.
HISTORY
Founded in 1917, the NHL awards the Stanley Cup to its play-off champion each year. First donated by Lord Stanley of Preston in 1892, the Cup is the oldest existing trophy in North American professional sport, and carries a tradition unlike any other — the name of every player on each winning team is engraved directly onto it.
The Montreal Canadiens are the competition’s most successful club by some distance, with twenty-four Stanley Cup titles. Most recently, in 2026 the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Vegas Golden Knights to lift the Cup for the second time in their history — and their first since 2006.
