You’re in. Here’s how to get the most out of your subscription.
Hello! So you’ve subscribed (maybe) and are now wondering exactly what you should do week to week. Here’s a quick rundown.
HOW TO ACCESS THE RECOMMENDATIONS
There are three ways to get the information – most subscribers use a combination of all three:
WHEN SHOULD I CHECK?
Most subscribers check in on Thursday or Friday evening, by which point the majority of weekend fixtures will have been priced by bookmakers and the bulk of value bets will be live.
However, as you can see below, opportunities will change depending on when you check and how far out you are from kick off. Pick the time that best suits you, your risk profile and your bank,
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?
Variance is part of the edge.
This service works because it backs value at higher odds – our average rugby selection is priced around 4/1 for example. That’s where the edge lives, but it’s also where the variance comes from.
Smart Betting Club’s independent analysis puts the expected longest losing run at around 15 bets, with a 50% chance of experiencing a 42-point drawdown in any given year. That’s not a bug — it’s the natural shape of a high-odds value strategy.
As Nick Rust, former COO of Ladbrokes, an SBC member who follows the service for his own betting, put it:
“Be prepared for some swings. Advised selections are often 4/1+ in basically a two-sided outcome. Necessarily there will be losing runs and variance is going to be higher than services which predict either side of a middle line. Set your bank up conservatively accordingly.”
SBC recommends a 150-point bank for rugby, a 250-point bank for football, and a 200-point bank for both combined — and rates the minimum follow period at 12 months.
If you’re looking for steady, incremental weekly profits, this isn’t that. If you’re looking for a genuine data-driven edge that compounds meaningfully over time, you’re in the right place.
STAKING: HOW MUCH TO BET?
This is where many bettors go wrong. A few principles to follow:
Use a fixed bank. Set aside a dedicated betting bank – an amount you’re comfortable losing entirely – and bet as a percentage of that bank, not from general funds. See above for the SBC recommended sizes.
Keep stakes consistent. We suggest 1–3% of your bank per bet for Value subscribers. For Premium subscribers using the Kelly method, stake sizes are calculated for you – follow the Kelly recommendation and don’t chase losses by increasing stakes.
Don’t overexpose on any single weekend. If there are 15 value bets flagged and you take all of them, you’re concentrated. Select the best-looking opportunities, not everything on the board.
Premium Subscribers get specific recommendations — including Kelly-calculated stake sizes — taking the decision-making out of the process. If you want us to do more of the heavy lifting, see the Premium explainer →
