The NFL is made up of thirty-two teams, split into the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC). HISTORY
The league was founded in 1920 as the American Professional Football Association, adopting the name National Football League two years later. Its modern shape was set by the 1970 merger with the rival American Football League, which created the two-conference structure still in use today. The Super Bowl, first played in 1967, has since grown into the most-watched annual event on American television.
The New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers share the record with six Super Bowl titles apiece.
