Traditionally, one Northern Hemisphere side might play 2 or 3 tests against the same opposition. However this is changing a little in recent years with sides often playing a traditionally ‘Tier 2’ nation. Generally all of the top 20 sides in the world will be in action at some stage.
The Northern Hemisphere sides are usually coming to the end of their season and have reasonable form. Howwever, the Southern Hemisphere sides are starting their season ahead of The Rugby Championship. π
TheΒ 2025 internationals is expected to be the last year in which βTier Iβ countries compete in the non-organised format. This is following the creation of theΒ Nations Championship. ThisΒ is an upcomingΒ competition scheduled to take place in the existing 2026 international windows.
The competition will consist of twelve teams. It will involve the currentΒ Six Nations andΒ SANZAAR unions, as well as two unknown invited unions widely reported to beΒ FijiΒ andΒ Japan. The competition will be held in the years when there is no LionsΒ tour or World Cup.
