It began play in the 2017β18 season, superseding the former Women’s Premiership, and introducing elements of professionalism in the sport’s highest level. In its first six seasons, the competition was known as the Premier 15s.
A total of 14 clubs have been involved in the top flight since the league’s inception in the 2017β18 season. The most recent clubs to make debuts in Premiership Woman’s Rugby wereΒ Trailfinders WomenΒ andΒ Leicester Tigers Women, who made their top-flight debut in the 2023β24 season. Five clubs βΒ Bristol,Β Gloucester-Hartpury,Β Harlequins,Β LoughboroughΒ andΒ SaracensΒ β have appeared in every season to date. Up until 2024, Saracens have won 3 times, Gloucester twice and Harlequins once. Exeter Chiefs have been in the final twice, and Bristol once, but have never won.
Premiership Women’s Rugby runs concurrently with the Allianz Cup. This is a similar annual competition contested by the same clubs. However the teams are instead split into two pools, and only play one series of round-robin matches to determine places in the knockouts. The Allianz Cup began play in the 2021β22 season.

The RFU stressed the need for financially viable clubs in the wake of theΒ COVID-19 pandemic. Worcester WarriorsΒ were temporarily suspended during theΒ 2022β23 seasonΒ due to financial difficulties. These were resolved within a month and Worcester were unsuspended
